Lin-Manuel Miranda to join HCHS Theater group for Q & A!

 

Only 6 days left to get your tickets for "Merrily We Roll Along," featuring HCES and HCHS alum Lin-Manuel Miranda as Charlie!

 

As a fantastic special treat, Lin-Manuel has agreed to meet with our HCHS group after the show for a brief Q & A!  We're thrilled to be able to offer this to all ticket-buyers, and we hope you'll join us!

 

The PTA has 40 seats remaining in the bloc of front-mezzanine seats for the almost sold-out February 12, 2pm matinee at New York City Center. Performed last year by HCHS Rep, we hope you will join us to cheer Lin-Manuel on.

PTA GRANTS

Hunter High School Student Clubs and Faculty Members:

 

It is that time of the year when the PTA Grants Committee is ready to receive your grant applications.  The instructions and the forms are available on the Hunter PTA website https://www.hunterpta.org/pta-grants.  The deadline for applications is Wednesday, February 8th  2012.  Please keep in mind we do not fund food, grade activities, sports teams (we can fund student sport clubs) or capital improvements.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT – BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD

 

The Biology Olympiad open exam will be offered Friday, Feburary 17, starting at 11:20 am in Room 404.  This is a 50-minute exam for advanced Biology students.

 

Interested students must register online before February 15

HCES HUNTER TALKS

Hunter Talks is proud to present:

“Ahead of Time”

A special screening of the award-winning documentary on the life and career of journalist, photographer, and humanitarian Ruth Gruber

February 9 at 6:00pm in the auditorium

Hunter Talks is thrilled that Ms. Gruber, 100 years old, will join us for a brief Q&A after the screening.

The screening is open to parents, faculty, and friends, as well as students and siblings grades 6 and above.  The film will be shown free of charge, and runs 73 minutes.

I-HELP LIBERIA – SHOE DRIVE


When:  Throughout February, Room 409 will be open for you to drop off your donations.

Do you have lightly worn shoes that you no longer want? Why not send them to Liberia where someone needs them? Join our annual shoe drive! We call it a "shoe drive," but really if you have items like used books or calculators, we'd be happy to ship those over to Liberia for you too. Thanks in advance for your generosity!

RACIAL IDENTITY PANEL – FEBRUARY 13th

 

Mosaic, the PTA committee devoted to nurturing diversity at Hunter, is hosting a Racial Identity Panel on Mon. Feb. 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Speakers include: Khalil Gibran Muhammad, the director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture; Margaret Chen, a sociology professor of Hunter College; Jessica Forsyth, a psychologist who has studied racism and traumatic stress; and David Joffe, the HCHS African-American Studies teacher.  Refreshments and free childcare will be provided.  We look forward to seeing you there.

SUMMER PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN THE ARTS

On Wednesday, February 8th during activities period, Hunter’s newly chartered chapter of NAHS (National Art Honor Society) will be facilitating an information sharing session about summer programs in visual arts, music and theater.  The activity will be in the auditorium and will quickly break into smaller discipline-specific groups within the space.

We welcome all students who have participated in a class, camp, program or internship, either in the city or residential, to come and share their experiences. 

All students who are interested in hearing about summer opportunities from a student perspective are encouraged to attend.

A TRUE NOVICE CHINESE CLASS

 

A true novice Chinese language class which has been especially geared towards non-Chinese students will start next Wednesday. If you are interested in learning Chinese, don’t miss this great opportunity! Please contact us at chinese@hunterpta.org as soon as possible.

 

Dates of classes:   February 1 to April 11

Days and Times:  Every Wednesday, 3:55-4:55. 

Cost:  $60.00 to cover textbooks, supplies for activities, etc.

 

SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM - CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

 

Student Aide Volunteers for the Hunter Summer Enrichment Program

Come and have some fun this summer in July, working with gifted students from all over the world!

Students in grades 7-11 are welcome to pick up an application to be a student aide volunteer for the Hunter Summer Enrichment Program.

The program starts July 5th and runs through July 31st, 2012.  Student aides work at Hunter from Monday through Thursday, from approximately 8:30-3pm.

All volunteers who apply must make a full time commitment and work for the entire run of the program. You will have a lot of responsibility but you will also have a lot of fun!

Applications are available in room #236. First come, first served.
