From KATHERINE SCHULTEN - LIBRARY COMMITTEE

At the auction last weekend, we raised money for new books, and as part of our display we included a list that the librarian, Eugene Lim, made for us showing the most popular titles this year. Several parents have asked for a copy of that list since they can use it to provide suggestions for summer reading for their own children, so here is that list for your consideration.

Happy reading!

Besides being a parent, I'm also the editor of the New York Times Learning Network, which is a free blog about "teaching and learning with The New York Times." This summer we're running a Summer Reading Contest of our own which is open to anyone 13-25, and for which we choose, and publish, a weekly winner. All students need to do is write in each week and tell us what story in the NYT interested them the most that week and why. Anyone is welcome to write in, and the contest runs from June 15 - August 17.

Here's the link: http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/27/our-third-annual-summer-reading-contest/

ASPIRE: A Leadership Program for Asian-American Young Women

ASPIRE is an eight-seminar leadership project for Asian American young women, ages 15-17, residing in New York City. Asian Americans are known and stereotyped as academic high-achievers, but the same brilliance doesn't shine through when we look at statistics concerning their representation in public service.

The program aims to do three things:

1) discuss the unique perspective that Asian American women can    bring to the leadership table

2) discuss and try to find the root causes of the lack of Asian American women in public service and community leadership today

3) give basic Leadership 101 training.

You may visit aspirenyc.webs.com for more information and how to participate or contact us atasianwomenaspire@gmail.com.

CHINATOWN YOUTH INITIATIVES:  SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Chinatown Youth Initiatives is a for-youth-by-youth organization based in Manhattan's Chinatown. The mission of CYI is to involve high school students across the city with community issues, specifically within the Chinatown and the Asian-American communities, and to empower youth to address these issues.

The Summer Leadership Institute is a weekly program that will begin June 23, 2012 and conclude on August 11, 2012.  High school participants will meet for free Saturday workshops centered around social issues, ranging from the gentrification of Chinatown to representation in the media. We expose our participants to aspects of Asian-American history that are not usually covered in academic curriculums and engage youth in discussions on privilege and self-identity.  In doing so, we encourage our members to critically examine their roles in their communities, and to collaboratively develop the leadership skills necessary to address the needs and wants of these communities.

Check out our website www.cyinyc.org for the application and more information about the program!

Also feel free to contact us via. our organization's e-mail apply@cyinyc.org or our student volunteers (betty.fong@cyinyc.org, and alina.shen@cyinyc.org).

GOOD LUCK!

KONY 2012: SPREAD THE WORD

Kony 2012 is a campaign started by the not-for-profit group Invisible Children Inc. against the Ugandan guerilla group leader and head of the Lord’s Resistance Army, Joseph Kony. Whitney Biennial 2012

Wednesday, March 7
4–6 pm

Kick off this spring with a free guided tour of the just-opened Whitney Biennial 2012! Find out about the works on view and exchange ideas with like-minded colleagues. The multidisciplinary nature of the exhibition provides an excellent platform for collaboration among different subject areas, so bring a teacher from another discipline. Light refreshments will be provided before the tours, so come early.

Admission is free, but
registration is required. Please RSVP by March 1.

Guided Visits

We continue to offer hour-long thematic gallery tours that build upon classroom learning, introducing students to three to five works of art through discussions and activities that incorporate the artist’s voice and process. Most of our guided visits with a Museum educator take place before Museum hours.
Guided Visits are free for all K–12 New York City public schools. All other schools may visit at a cost of $200 per group. Request a guided visit.

Classroom Collaboratives

In this three-part series, a Museum educator works with the classroom teacher to design a customized program and will visit the school before and after the Museum visit.
Classroom Collaboratives is free for New York City public schools; $500 for all other schools. Apply now.

Self-Guided Tours

High school groups may arrange for self-guided tours during public hours. These tours allow high school students and chaperones to arrive at the Museum together and then disperse into the galleries in small groups of four or five.

Sign up for a self-guided tour.

Free customized Guided Visits and Classroom Collaboratives are offered to school-aged students with various disabilities and diverse learning styles.

News of the Week for 9 January 2012

HUNTER LIFE

NEED FEEDBACK from the Hunter Community (Students, Faculty and Parents) – Respond to hunterlife@hunterpta.org

Happy New Year! At our most recent meeting in December, we discussed the possibility/usefulness of studying how Hunter students (7-12) use the internet/online resources and ideas on how it can be used to enhance a student’s educational experience. Below is an initial list of questions we have compiled (the format is yet to be determined -- homeroom discussions, survey, etc.) – please comment and add additional ones you think would be useful:

•               Describe your typical internet usage.for homework, research, communicating with classmates/friends, shopping, how many different tasks are you engaged in within a 2-hour time span?

•                What is the main way in which you communicate with your classmates, club members, etc. (Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, etc)? If so, how does a faculty advisor of a club tap into this?

•               What is/are the most common adult misperception(s) about how you use the internet?

•               Have you or a friend experienced "cyberbullying" or other negative experiences, how would you define cyberbullying? Any suggestions in the event you see it occurring, remedies?

•               How do you collaborate with your classmates on HW?

•               Do you use resources like Khan Academy for subject learning? Do you use any programs which "times out" your internet access?

•               Do  you want to see more material posted on Blackboard? How can your teachers more effectively use the internet?

•               Do you check the Hunter website daily, weekly, ever? Do you receive the Hunter Online Weekly e-mail, do you get a chance to read through it?

Thank you for your feedback. If you feel that this study is not useful, please let us know as well. You can e-mail us with your comments or join us at our next meeting on Friday, Jan 13, 2012 (Activities and 5th, 11:15 AM) in Room 210.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY:  CALL FOR SUGGESTIONS

The Cultural Diversity Committee, which has been organized to address the issues and experiences of diversity in the Hunter community, is proposing an event for the March 23rd Professional Development Day.  This is an event in search of a theme which will serve to raise awareness about diversity as it is reflected and lived in our community.  The Diversity Committee is asking all of Hunter's constituencies for suggestions of topics or themes which could frame this event.  Are you concerned about how diversity is addressed in our curriculum? How should controversial words in what is read in class be handled?  Does free speech always trump "political correctness"? Do you have specific anecdotes you would like to be discussed?  You can send your ideas to the provided link or, if you prefer, in writing to an envelope outside of room 402, as well as to Mr. Joffe, Social Studies Department.  Please send your suggestions anonymously to the following link:

Join Hunter's "Chinese For Dummies", which is open to everyone regardless of race and skill level! The teachers for the club will be current high school juniors who are fluent in Chinese, and under the guidance of peers rather than much older teachers, you will be learning Chinese in a stress-free, fun environment. The purpose of the club is to allow newcomers to the language to be able to learn basic vocabulary and converse in Chinese. While our focus is speaking, we will offer a reading and writing class to those who already know how to speak Chinese if enough people sign up! So come join us Monday Activities in room 225!

A NEW ONLINE HOME FOR SCHOOL PICTURES – ReplayIt.com

We are excited to let you know about a fun, interactive website that we are using to share all of the great photos of our school year.  The website is ReplayIt.com - a unique photo-sharing site that allows our entire school community to upload, share, and enjoy the images of the year as they happen.   Organized around the timeline of the school year, ReplayIt lets you see Hunter life, from the big events to the everyday, from all different angles.

As a yearbook staff, we are excited to share lots of photos on ReplayIt.com throughout the year.  We are also excited to see your photos!  We like ReplayIt because it provides us with more great content (the pictures uploaded from the school community) that we can include in our official story of the year!

The goal is to capture all school photos in one spot – and we need your help.  We are hoping that you can use ReplayIt as the site to share the images from your sport, class, or club.  Once you register at ReplayIt.com, you – and your group – can view and upload images.

We are excited to get everybody involved in ReplayIt and appreciate your help!  Let us know if you have any questions at annalshchs@gmail.com

See you on ReplayIt!
